Every year, more than 14,000 patients with blood cancers need a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor to help save their life. Sadly, 6 out of 10 patients never receive the lifesaving transplant they need. This could be changed if more people registered as potential bone marrow donors.
On Saturday, March 12, at the Ft. Lee Recreation Center, the Lopez family will be registering committed donors during their bone marrow donor drive. Registration is simple and includes an eligibility screening, filling out a form, and swabbing each cheek for 30 seconds to collect cells for use in matching with a patient.
Hispanics only represent 3% on the national registry. Your swab counts! You could be someone’s second chance at life. Becoming a registered bone marrow donor means you may be the one person able to give a patient with blood cancer a second chance at life.
