James County Firefighters Hold Bone Marrow Donor Drive for Five-year-old Gracie Toutaint-Perry. She loves her family, playing with her friends and learning new things at school. This past December, Gracie received a seemingly minor injury on the playground at school. The injury did not heal and kept getting worse, when finally a few visits to the pediatrician’s office, urgent care, the ER and the Children’s Hospital revealed that Gracie had acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Thankfully, Gracie is currently in remission, but if she relapses, a bone marrow transplant will be her best chance. “So many kids and adults, for that matter, are in need of a donor match, but it is a simple thing to be tested and potentially save someone’s life,” says Gracie’s mother Michelle Toutaint. To help her and the tens of thousands of other patients in need fight the odds, her family and the James County Firefighters will host a donor drive to register new potential donors. Registration consists of swabbing the inside of the mouth and completing a registration form. Anyone in good health between the ages of 18 to 55 is eligible.
