Eugene's Story

Eugene Doherty and his daughter

Eugene has been a long standing, key volunteer with the Sleepy Hollow Sprint Triathlon for 12 years. In December 2020, Eugene was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Prior to his diagnosis, he was an active triathlete. He began swimming at the age of 8 and competed in his first triathlon in 1994. In 2014, he was even offered the chance to go pro by joining Team USA. Outside of triathlons, Eugene is an active member of his community and a valued member of the local fire department where he serves as the captain of his company.

Eugene was told he would need a bone marrow transplant to battle his diagnosis. He was lucky to find a matching donor in his brother and underwent his transplant the first week of June. We want to register more donors in Eugene's name to help patients like him who may not have found a matching donor as easily. The more people on the registry offers more opportunities at a second chance at life.

Registering as a donor is a quick and easy process - request your kit in the mail, swab your cheeks, and send it back. A quick 10 minutes could be the difference needed to provide patients with blood cancer and blood disorders a second chance at life!
