Montsho is an Austin-born and based poet, writer, visual artist, and musician who was diagnosed with acute leukemia over Christmas 2014. He is 23. He was being treated with high-dose chemotherapy when his doctors discovered that his cancer is particularly high risk and more prone to recur. The only hope is a bone marrow transplant.
“My mother explained to me that people of color have less than a 10 percent chance of finding a match on the National Donor Registry,” he says. No match has been found for Montsho, but with the help of a new type of treatment, his doctors are hopeful that a half-match donor will be the solution. Montsho’s half-sister Amber was found to be the best match for this procedure.
Montsho wants to do something to pay it forward. He and his family are sponsoring One Swab One Life (#oneswabonelife), a bone marrow drive to be held at Austin’s only African American music and cultural festival, the Austin Urban Music Festival. “The goal is modest,” says Montsho. “If we can get just 100 potential donors to register, that would be great!”
Montsho’s story is still unfolding. He is scheduled to receive his half-match transplant in April 2015. “I’m just grateful that I have an option,” he says. “I want to make sure others also have a chance.”
